It was sad to hear of the death of Gough Whitlam today. He defined a generation of Australian politics not only because of what happened to him (being sacked by the Governer-General) but for what he did as Prime Minister - introducing health care benefits, free tertiary education, asserting a genuinely local identity for Australia. He was a true progressive Labour leader and a politician who captured the spirit of his time. Not a bad age, either - 98. Rest easy
