It was said of him that he only saw the good in people; that he was naïve. And there was truth in it, and more. He saw that seeing the good in people had the power to call the good in people, call out the good in people. And he saw that backbiting, being party to the ugly gossips and hidden shames of others, destroyed his feeling for others, inserted an ugliness in his heart where heretofore no ugliness existed. It was not that he didnt know filth existed; it was that he refused to feed it, to feed it and eat his own heart. Yes, he was naïve... Willfully, lovingly naïve. Believers, avoid making too many assumptions—some assumptions are sinful—and do not spy on one another or speak ill of people behind their backs: would any of you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother? No, you would hate it. So be mindful of God: God is ever relenting, most merciful. Quran 49:18
