It was semi-final weekend for Parkes Hockey Incorporated with some excellent games of hockey on over the course of the weekend. The A grade men’s major semi saw Magpies defeat Rovers 6-3. Magpies dominated possession throughout the match and showed superior speed all over the field. Rovers showed glimpses of what they are capable of producing, but were unable to do this for consistent periods of time. Kurt Lovett was outstanding for Magpies with Kieren Deland a work-horse in defence for Rovers. Goal-scorers for Magpies were Andrew Bourke (2), Kurt Lovett, Nathan Munday, Vincent Umbers and Dylan Wakefield. Hamish Orr (2) and Jeremy Huk scored for Rovers. Best and Fairest: Magpies – Kurt Lovett, Nathan Munday, Peter Amor. Rovers – Kieren Deland, Toby Nash, Luke Greenwood. In the minor semi Masters produced an upset against the more fancied Cellar Crows side winning their match 3-1 to book a spot in next week’s elimination final against Rovers. Masters played a disciplined game and made the most of their chances in the circle with Matthew Searl scoring twice and Joel Thomson scoring once. Trent Thomson was outstanding in goals for Masters with his performance largely contributing to his side’s victory. Mitch McGlashan scored the lone goal for Cellars in a game where they had plenty of chances. Best and Fairest: Masters – Trent Thomson, Graeme Tanswell, Joel Thomson. Cellars – Graeme Thompson, Ben Hawken, Ryan Edwards. In the A grade women’s major semi-final, Magpies took control of their match and defeated Cubs 4-0 to book the first spot in the grand final. Magpies played a smart team game with Cubs unable to produce their usual style of hockey. Codie Wakefield was outstanding in defence for Magpies, constantly producing magnificent tackles and repelling any attack from the Cubs side. Janelle Thompson (2), Cherie Johnstone and Ella-J Harris were the goal-scorers for Magpies. Best and Fairest: Magpies – Codie Wakefield, Wendy Rix, Codie Sense. Cubs – Denise Gersbach, Emma Potts, Jane Mattiske. Cellar Crows and Middleton played out a very exciting minor semi-final with a penalty stroke the decider in the match. Both sides played some nice attacking hockey with the scores levelled at 2-2 after goals from Teegan Rodgers and Louise Hawken for Cellars and Michelle Melhuish and Mel Parker for Middleton. With scores levelled and the possibility of extra time looming, Cellars forced a penalty stroke after a ball hit a Middleton player’s foot on the goal-line. Cass Hill made no mistake in converting a fine penalty stroke to give her side a 3-2 victory and a spot in the elimination final against Cubs. Best and Fairest: Cellars – Tara Fisher, Bryanna Duffy. Middleton – Emily Dean, Sarah Melhuish, Niamh Dixon, Tamara Fagan. In the B grade men’s major semi Magpies Black earned first spot in the grand final defeating Middleton 2-1. Dylan Wakefield was outstanding for the black and whites in this match. Goals were scored by Mitch Miles and Mitchell Townsend for Magpies with Barry Reeves scoring Middleton’s lone goal. Best and Fairest: Magpies – Dylan Wakefield, Paul Townsend, William Cassell. Middleton – Barry Reeves, Scott Allen. In the B grade men’s minor semi, extra time was required to separate Magpies Academy and Cellar Crows after the scores were level at 2-2 at the end of ordinary time. Glenn Johnstone and Harry Williams scored for Magpies and Robert Dunn and Grant Skinner scored for Cellar Crows. But it was Jason Thomson who was the hero, scoring in golden goal extra time to keep his side alive for another week of the competition. Best and Fairest: Cellars – Jason Thomson, Andrew Francis, Grant Skinner. Magpies – Glenn Johnstone, Andrew Rice, Angus Arndell. Rovers have booked a place in the B grade women’s grand final after defeating Cellar Crows Black 2-1 in a very close game. Rovers gained an early 2-0 lead with goals to Susie Mackay and Hannah Ross, but Cellar Crows fought back valiantly with a goal to Toni Speakman. Best and Fairest: Rovers – Hannah Ross, M’Lissa Ross, Rochelle Smith. Cellars – Michelle Symington, Michelle Skinner, Sally McPherson. In the minor semi, it was down to golden goal extra time to separate Middleton Pink and Middleton Maroon after a 1-1 score-line at the end of the match. Megan Hornery scored for Maroon and India Draper scored for Pink in a tight match played in warm conditions. India Draper was the star of the match scoring in extra time to keep Pink alive for another week. Best and Fairest: Pink – India Draper, Tamara Fagan. Maroon – Robin Dean, Raelene Knights, Michelle Melhuish, Cherie Simpson. In the C grade women’s major semi-final Marist took control of their match defeating Middleton Eagles 4-1. Sarah Job (2), Teigan Miles and Carla Peden scored for Marist with Arden O’Brien scoring for Eagles. Best and Fairest: Marist – Teigan Miles, Justine Morrissey. Eagles – Jenna Evans, Casey Evans, Carmen Amor. In the minor semi-final Magpies defeated Cellar Crows Aqua 3-1. Amelia Tanswell (2) and Emily Townsend scored for Magpies with Jacqueline Simpson scoring for Cellars. Amelia Tanswell was outstanding and was the key player for Magpies during the match. Best and Fairest: Magpies – Amelia Tanswell, Emily Townsend. Cellars – Maddison Thomson, Amy McCabe.
