It was so powerful starting Martin Luther King Day with the annual breakfast where hundreds of people rose to their feet to celebrate a special award for Dr. Josie Johnson, who has done so much for our community. It was also powerful to end the day by seeing Selma. I was worried that the movie would be another example of Hollywood oversimplifying history. Instead I was pleased it wasnt soft peddled. You could feel the overwhelming brutality and injustice. On a day when too often there are glossy images of King that make everyone comfortable, its so important we remember it was not safe, people died and horrendous things happened to people asking the most basic rights. Tomorrow I go back to work where Im rededicating myself to the work at Generation Next , knowing how much further we have to go.
