It was the highest grossing film of the year in Germany & it was the sixth highest grossing film of 1984 in the U.S. It has spawned six hellish sequels, an animated series, & an abomination of a TV series. 30 years ago, on this date, Warner Bros. released Police Academy upon the unsuspecting American moviegoing public. The film, based very, very, very, loosely on a true story (blame Canada), has the Mayor signing a law that anybody & anyone can sign up to the Academy to try & become cops. What made this first & best installment is the characters. Bruce Willis auditioned for the role of Mahoney. Tom Hanks, & Michael Keaton were also considered for the role. Director Hugh Wilson (who has a cameo in the film) cast Steve Guttenberg in the role after seeing him in the critically aclaimed Diner. Michael Winslow who plays noisemaker Larvell Jones signed on after being spotted opening for the legendary Count Bassey.
