It was the summer of 1989. I had just finished my freshman year at NYU and was living in an apartment on E. 83rd between York and East End. I worked at New York Video Store and was an usher at Oh, Calcutta!. I remember that summer with great fondness because John Williams and Jason Crigler and I made lots of wonderful music together. We also went to see several movies that summer. I remember it as a transformative experience, movie-wise. I was eager to see so many of that summers films. Many of them turned out to be disappointments. I was never as eager to hand my money over to the Hollywood machine ever again. Still...one movie changed my whole view of film and shaped my perception for several years after. The summer of 1989 was twenty-five years ago. Here are some of the previews of the films I remember watching back then. Without question, Do the Right Thing changed me. Alternately, Tim Burtons Batman soured me on the summer blockbuster for a long time. I have learned not to be too hasty in my judgements. Ive got to remember to keep an open mind.
