It wasnt a very Happy New Year for 50 domestic rats that were dumped at Heritage Park, Logan. Our RSPCA Metro Inspector Leonie was called out to assist these little creatures on New Years Day after they were found dumped in an open guinea pig type hutch. It was a different day on the road for Leonie as she put her rescue skills to work capturing the escaped rats. It took a total of 5 hours to catch all of the rats! They were all very hungry and drank 1.2L of water on site. One of our amazing volunteers also went to Bunnings and purchased 3 humane rat traps out of her own pocket to catch the last few rats that were more shy than the rest. We are now looking for homes for these little ones! The 25 male rats rescued are now available to adopt at the Brisbane RSPCA Animal Care Campus. The other 25 were female and are currently in foster care homes to determine if they are pregnant before they can be rehomed. Our Media Spokesperson Michael Beatty said, “There was no way these rats would have survived at the site. They would have been instant prey to dogs, owls and other wildlife.” If you know further details about this case that can help our inspectorate investigate please email [email protected] or call 1300 ANIMAL. You can view the rats available to adopt here - bit.ly/14wW7JX. Rats are social creatures and make great pets!
