It wasnt so long ago that artists relied entirely on The Church, or rich patrons, to survive. Their subject matter wasnt exactly unrestricted, so I am always delighted to see how they managed to express themselves creatively in their works within their constraints. Would you have been able to thrive as artists/craftspersons Maggie Moschell and Charles Grund? As a pastry chef, part of me would certainly enjoy doing all the fancy tedious detail which Carême so famously cited to link architecture with patisserie. Also, how did this artist know to foreshadow Gandalf the Gray in this sculptural frieze?
