It wasn’t just 70s rockers rediscovering their mojo either, as American alt rock stalwarts Guided by Voices, recorded not one, but two, great albums, before going on hiatus again. Both albums had their charms, with Motivational Jumpsuit being the more cohesive of the two, whereas Cool Planet was an enjoyable exercise in spontaneity and sounds for all the world like someone channel surfing through a number of alternative rock radio stations. Both are as good a jump off point for exploring the band’s mind-boggling output as any, with their easy free-wheeling charms ensuring that they are both albums that I have returned to more frequently than I would have expected.
