It will be early next year before a number of alternative routes for the city outer bypass will be brought forward. Galway County Council has been working on a number of alternative solutions following a public consultation process in July. The N6 project is being managed by the Galway National Roads office on behalf of the city and county councils. Planning permission for the original bypass project was overturned by the Supreme Court last year. Concerns had been raised regarding the potential ecological impact on Lough Corrib, which is protected under EU Law. A team based in a dedicated project office in Ballybrit is now carrying out extensive surveys and examining all environmental considerations. It had been hoped the proposed routes would be brought forward in October. However this has now been pushed back to early next year.
