It with heart-aching sadness that Ian and Nicola said goodbye to Marty a few hours ago. Ian and Nicola have had a very precious five months with Marty since he was diagnosed with cancer in November. At first they thought he had only a few days to live but it was clear that this beautiful, amazing dog had other ideas. He was not ready to leave. But yesterday he was. Sadly, late this afternoon, we had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to Marty and let him get a peaceful, relaxed and dignified end to his battle with cancer. Everybody at Advanced Critical Care, Emergency & Specialty Services , Veterinary Cancer Group and Healthy Paws Pet Insurance have been nothing short of amazing (several of the vet techs and nurses were in tears and came in to hug him goodbye!). The support from complete strangers, who have never met Marty; from our friends and family who loved him almost as much as we do; and from the lady who started it for us, and helped us face the tough decision at the end, Jemima Harrison at Black Retriever X Rescue is overwhelming, heart warming and comforting . Marty was rescued from a pound in Ireland, transported to England where he lived with us for 6 years and he flew out to join us in California just over a year ago. Hes a well traveled dog. Its been the hardest day, but in the end, the decision was relatively easy once we saw Marty this afternoon. He wasnt himself. In the end he fell asleep on my lap as I brushed him in the Vets office, and Nicola and I were laying on the floor next to him, stroking him as he peacefully drifted off. Hell be missed terribly - but celebrated often. Thanks for the memories Marty...
