It would be hard to overstate the importance of student desk organization when it comes to learning. Whether your desk are in rows, pods, or doubles, those groupings will dramatically affect the ability of kids to pay attention. It doesn’t matter how the desks are organized (I use many different strategies throughout the year) but every child needs to have a clear view of the main instructional area. This is so important that I make it a point to sit at every single group to ensure that students have an unimpeded view to my main teaching area. Any other strategies for maximizing student engagement when you say “may I have your attention?”
