It would be one of those warm, dry, Indian summer kinds of days in the early onset of autumn. Cathy was beginning to grow restless in the early morning of eight-thirty a.m. As usual her mother poked her head in to warn her, that yet another breakfast had been left to freeze by her lack of promptness to the dining room table. School had just begun and yet summers warm shroud and light thoughts still clung to the young girls mind like dreams to sleeping babes. Why did it have to end? Why did summer always come on strong and then leave like a sailor at port? Not that the summer had been particularly spectacular for Cathy, no, it had been the usual summer of easy weather and lounging with friends—save the interruption by her terror of a brother Gustav—she had sworn the demon had been adopted. Nope, summer was nothing special, Billy Scarns once again failed to notice her new hair cut, the new top she got for the beach party, and of course that she even existed. Something that Cathy was beginning to really despise in the boy even if it did drive her to further longings for the crush. Her father had said, “If the boy had any sort of brains, he’d put down the football pick up a pencil and learn a thing or two.” The thought made Cathy uncomfortable and angry, ‘what does he know anyway?’ she thought. “Dad’s always going on about the time he grew up in and how a man was expected to love God and country, serve his company and household. Not playing silly games for a living.” The more she thought of her father the more restless she felt laying in bed, it would only be a few more minutes till he came screaming in talking about “Laziness leads to communists!” She didn’t need another lecture from President Barnes. Cathy pulled herself from the warm, cozy bed and began to make the trip downstairs. It would have been an easy journey if it weren’t riddled with the landmines of Gustav’s plastic army men, space rangers, and anything else he thought was deliciously cruel.
