It would be wise to listen to the writing on the wall about the emerging need to decentralize administration into more effective and smaller state units if we are to ensure economic and social justice to each and every citizen of India. This is the phase of evolution of democracy in our country and we need to consider the spate of statehood demands more realistically, as the signs of the festering deep-rooted democratic aspirations of the certain communities/tribes in various pockets of the country, who were left out in the previous state reorganizations, being ignored and dominated by the influential/dominant elite class/communities of a state. All state reorganizations in the past have been on the basis of distinct cultural diversity and on linguistic grounds...so the future rationalization/demarcations of the state territories must also be based on emerging realities of linguistic and cultural diversities and the strength of population. Only that will create cohesion among the people of a state, which will further strengthen the federal structure of our republic in the true sense of the term. Presently we lack such cohesion and a sense of belongingness within the the same state because of inappropriate organisation of the state boundaries. USSR ultimately broke up into naturally different countries, but in India the idea of nationhood is more embedded. It is just that, with time, we realize that we have more diversity than is spelt out in our national anthem-JANA GANA MANA... In every large state their has been ignorance about the needs and desires of the people/communities who lived on the outer fringes of the state. Our Chief Ministers seem to only focus at the centre/capital region, while the burgeoning youth population of the hinterland become more and more restless...as is the case of Telengana and all other statehood demands. If the central political leadership turns a blind to the raging wave of statehood demands, adopts an ostrich approach or deal with the protests as law and order problem, it could lead to a more aggravated situation causing serious damage to our proud democratic traditions, which may be capitalized by aggressive, hawk-eyed sovereign forces inimical to our country.
