It would take a longer piece to fully explain why the research which claims that cats are selfish and unfeeling is so bad. Anyone who has done good experimental research and knows cats could point to a number of problems in the design of the experiments. But here is one: Unlike dogs who can be indiscriminate and promiscuous friends, cats need to be wooed and romanced in a relationship. And you often have to make the first move. If you show your cat you love him or her, you will be loved in return. So any research design that does not take into account the behavior of the cats human companions in evaluate his or her behavior is simply not worth the trouble it took. Some people parallel lives with their cats. Some people form relationships with them.
