Italian (Ligurian) Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ligustica); wild - TopicsExpress

Italian (Ligurian) Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ligustica); wild (feral) hive on limestone cliff at Vivonne Bay; introduced to KI during early 1880s; KI proclaimed a Ligurian Bee sanctuary in 1885; KI now touted as having only pure strain of this race of bee in the world; focus of thriving KI apiary industry; unfortunately, mis-management in past has resulted in thousands of feral bee hives across KI; have taken up residence in tree hollows which would otherwise be available to hollow-nesting birds; industrious workers that rob a precious resource (nectar/pollen) at expense of native bees, insects and birds; did not evolve with our native flora and is possibly ineffective at pollinating some of our wild flowers when foraging for nectar.
