Italian archeologists recognized for work in Southern Iraq to develop Dhi-Qar/ An Nassiryah archaeological sites 2013-10 Italian group of archeologists working in the Iraqi province of Dhi Qar has won an award from ONLUS, a nonprofit organization supported by Vatican City. The Italian archeological team, currently excavating the site of Tel Abu Tbeirah, located around 12 miles from the ancient city of Ur, was chosen to receive the award from a pool of about 400 nominees. (including the ancient city of Ur and the house of the prophet Abraham P. ) The group of archeologists is headed by Dr. Franco d’Agostino, a professor at Sapienza University in Rome, and it is the third team of Western archeologists to work in ancient Ur since 1990. Two archeological groups headed by Dr. Elizabeth Stone of Stony Brook University in New York and Dr. Jane Moon of the University of Manchester in the UK had already worked in Dhi Qar during the past two years. Most the treasures of the Sumerian city of Ur are in the British Museum, National Museum of Iraq and University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. ANDY,
