Its 1:30am. *waving in the dark, momrades* Am risking jinxing it all to tell you the kids are finally asleep. ALL of them, praise Jesus and all the saints. One kid had surgery pins removed today. Not to be dramatic, but the doctor unscrewed the pins from her bones and drew them through her flesh as free flowing rivulets of blood drained from the holes. It was like a medieval blood ritual. Gruesome. Fascinating. Awesome. Awful. And another kid of mine broke his wrist at football practice tonight. Hes home from the ER now, splinted, awaiting a cast after swelling goes down in a few days. So tonights musical bedtime repertoire was even more operatic than usual; mostly cries of agony from the children with mangled bones, although the other children, not to be ENTIRELY outdone, you understand, managed a bereft wail or two about the injustices of having to brush teeth EVERY night. (Like we brush teeth every night - ha!) I have a tension headache from jaw-clenching. Theres not much I like less than listening to kids in pain. I dosed both wonky-boned kids eventually with their narcotics prescriptions which eased their arias to moans and then whimpers and then the heavy breathing of sleep. HOORAY FOR NARCOTICS! Whats more, Ive not given ANY narcotics to myself. Not even a little. I believe I deserve a reward. And that reward shall be a genuine attempt at SLEEP. Wish me luck, momrades.
