Its 20 years since I did my first Strongman competition in Derby - TopicsExpress

Its 20 years since I did my first Strongman competition in Derby (Midlands Strongest Man). It was a heavyweight contest and I came 3rd overall. I loved it and Steve Gardner (IAWA) ran a brilliant contest and we actually got paid! I won quite a few heavyweight contests before the 105kg category came into play. My last official contest was in 2006. I was a reserve for Britains Strongest Man @105kg. Nobody knew who I was that day really and I certainly wasnt a threat. There were 19 competitors including former champions. Darren Saddler was there to hand out the trophies and he had won it the previous few years before stepping up to World level. I started steady and by half way was about 5th overall. Then the last 3 events I basically blitzed and won them all. I won the event on the last stone! Seems like all my years of odd lifting had paid off :) I have always loved strength training. Below are some pictures to show you just what I was doing around 10 years ago in my backyard. I was making Atlas stones from scratch just for fun and just for myself to play with. No youtube, no facebook, just me and my stones! Train because you love it....not to prove something... Nick 3 Pics that say it all...all the equipment set up ready to make Atlas Stones! Me loading my 150kg stone onto tyres and pallets in the backyard. And finally at Aberdeen (Oz) loading the famous Bundanoon Stones and winning the competition.
