Its 2014. Right? And its International Day for Women. Right? So - TopicsExpress

Its 2014. Right? And its International Day for Women. Right? So why is it that today, whilst driving along listening to a science program on ABC Radio National, a female professor was summed up as being so and sos (a male) fellow professor? A FELLOW!! Shes a woman for god sakes! This question is beyond that of semantics! Our modern history and society are constructed on the norms of white middle class males. Equality is only for that group. All others function to their end. This occurs contrary to what we often feel. Up until fairly recently women were not able to make it into the realm of academia. Never mind having a position equal to that of her male counter parts. So the language used to describe her is gendered male?! Still! Incredible really. And surprisingly we just accept these crazy glitches in the system. And yes, definitely, there are more pressing issues at hand for equality of any minority group, than those of language. Or are there? If there is no language for women in academia, politics, law, science etc...then how can women ever be anything but second to the male dominant world in which she lives. The story of the minority is part of the whole story after all! Therefore, to have language is to have a voice; to have a voice is to be heard; to be heard is to be seen to exist. Then, maybe one day, she will become equal...on every level! This is true for all minorities!
