Its 4 PM Monday, May 5...normal streamflow for this date is right about 900 cfs, actual is 2,340 cfs. The creek is muddy, the Clark Fork is muddy, and the Blackfoot is muddy. If youre thinking about fishing, perhaps a better idea would be to get your spring work done so youre ready when the streams settle down. Its not only a mess out there, but the rivers are already sending debris down them. Joe & I will drive the entire length of the creek on Saturday, May 10 (our 17th anniversary) and Ill take some pics so you can see for yourself. We went up to mile 22 yesterday to check on the cabin that he built last year and saw a new log across the stream just above Egg Rock thats gonna cause some problems. Stream temp is cooling off a bit, and thats good. I was concerned that the salmon flies would hatch early, but I think theyll be delayed a bit longer now that its hanging in the 43 - 45 degree range (they need a week at 48+ degrees). We got a bunch of rain night before last, but I didnt have my rain gauge out yet. Weve had a few sprinkles today, and the same yesterday, but nothing measurable. I think its gonna hold off for a couple days, and then let loose again. Until then, the air temp is cooler and thatll slow down the melt a bit, though theres no turning back now. Things are greening up though, and spring has definitely come to Rock Creek. The wildflowers are starting to bloom, and the sheep have come back to our property and are hanging out in the birthing area. Im concerned about them though, because so far Ive only seen about 10. Hopefully the rest of the ewes are just delayed in heading this way. Losing those 7 babies to the road 2 years ago was such a tragedy, and it has impacted the herd. Ill keep you posted...
