Its Back: Biblical Conspiracies Reair Tonight Ive watched two of the episodes so far Wife of God and Secrets of the Sculpture so far, and I have to admit, although I have done extensive research over the last quarter-century on the lives of Jesus and Mary Magdalene and the Gnostic Gospels, there were still some little jewels of information in these two presents that I found particularly fascinating. Secrets of the Sculpture was impeccable in its presentation of the symbolism of Michelangelos use of the human anatomy in his works. Of particular interest to me, as a writer of historical fiction, was the statuette he carved that is believed to have been used as a model for the Vatican Pieta. That he used the symbol of the heart on the backside (the mantle) of the Madonna--who many agree is not Mary the mother but Mary Magdalene--and a cupid who ties together the two figures depicted, is especially symbolic of the love Jesus and Mary Magdalene are believed to have shared. Though religious artwork and iconography was among my studies, I had never had the opportunity to see this particular Michelangelo model, and I found Biblical Conspiracies presentation and interpretation of the piece quite compelling. As scholars, we must keep in mind that, for more than two thousand years, only the Canonical Gospels have been accepted by the Church (and by that I include the Roman Catholic Church, and most Christian Churches and orthodox biblical scholars as Truth. Our eyes have been covered and our beliefs honed by the constricting patriarchal hierarchy of the Church. Until recently, the laity was never exposed to the Gnostic texts, or the Apocrypha, or any other writings that tell the true story of the early Judeo-Christian community. The fact is there were many Gospels, many early writings and interpretations of the teachings of Jesus, and many views about what the early followers of Jesus should believe and should not believe. There were even questions whether the early community should follow a Jewish Jesus, or a Jesus adapted for a more Gentile lifestyle. Shows like Biblical Conspiracies might sensationalize controversial discoveries being examined by todays biblical scholars, but--mostly due to the power of the internet--the days of secret writings, hidden or covert beliefs, and hard evidence are gone. What is hard evidence must be thoroughly researched, properly translated, and presented to the public in a fair and non-biased manner. This vast treasury of hidden knowledge is our legacy--the one the Church hid from us--and it is key to understanding Jesuss ministry and his relationship to his disciples and us. I have faith that people who are presented with the facts, and all the facts, are savvy enough to make up their own minds. Perhaps that is the danger perceived by the Church . . . that the sheep will find the shepherd does not know where he is going.
