Its Jane Wiedlins 54th birthday today, May 20th. Ive never met her, but I do like her music. Shes probably best known as the rhythm guitarist and songwriter for The Go-Gos, which cranked out a bunch of good tunes in the pop punk genre, mostly from 1981 until 1984, when Wiedlin left the group to pursue a solo career. Her solo stuff is also good. She was born in 1960 and, growing up, listened to 1960s pop music, particularly by The Monkees and The Beatles, a couple bands that I also like a lot. As a teenager, Wiedlin became a fan of Sparks, a band that I really liked in the 1970s - they produced some quirky, humorous songs (later, their musical style changed and not for the better, in my opinion) - and she later recorded a song with them, Cool Places. Sparks was much more popular in the UK, even though it was a U.S. band. They moved to England in 1973 with their new manager, John Hewlett, who is no relation (that I am aware of, at least) to William Hewlett, who was born on this date, May 20th, 101 years ago, and co-founded the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) with David Packard. The laser printer that is attached to the computer that Im keying this post into is an HP. But I digress. Happy birthday, Jane!
