Its July and July is a mixed bag for me -- an emotional one punctuated by anniversaries and anniversaries of big losses. TS Eliot called April the cruelest month but the last 27 years, it has turned out to be July. July is a fun month -- I used to love the festivities on the deck atop the building i lived in on the Charles River during the Fourth of July on the Esplanade. No sweaters or jackets in July, no socks and a bearable amount of humidity here in New England. No black flies in Maine, Speaking of Maine, I adored going to the rented beach house in Wells that I was lucky to have every summer -- my weeks started in July and what a wonderful time I would have there each summer with friends and family. So it is with mixed feelings and more than a little apprehension that I acknowledge the first of July -- as July was also the month when I lost my father -- 27 years ago (july 10th)and my beloved partner, Larry (july 11th) nine years ago from muscular dystrophy. Without question, Larry made me a better person -- though ironically he let me be myself and loved me unconditionally with all my quirks and flaws. He made me laugh when I got huffy over something -- anything -- and shared one of the sweetest and most precious friendships of my life. I think of him with love every day, talk about him with Burt and tell Schmouggie Chevlowe stories and lines. It was Larry who said -- MONKEY BE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN....DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS....May July be a gentle, happy month for you this year.
