Its Learn More Unnecessary Things About Music Time. Before there was Jesus Music (Im looking at you Andrae Crouch and Amy Grant) which ANNOYS me to no end there was gospel music. Its an under appreciated for its variety, virtuosity and complexity, as well as its historic roots and influences. Some might be more choral and some emphasizing solo artists. Ohio and the Midwest might be more Bluesy or more rousing, Philly more melodic, Deep South more rag time / jazz or soulful, South Atlantic more folk... Early Southern music which formed a backbone, contributed stylistic freedom to close harmonies of jubilee style, adding ad libs and using repeated short phrases in the background to maintain a rhythmic base. California was more sophisticate and drew from a wide variety of influences, including genres from far afield such as Bossa Nova. Differences in music were not just personal and regional but reflected theological differences. There was a cross pollination between the forms of course, and few helped that process out more than James Cleveland. Associating with various churches choirs, he was more than anything a curator, and musically a conservative one (eschewing any instruments besides organ, piano, base and perhaps a minor drum). He recorded songs like Peace Be Still, which he unearthed after a few hundred years of not being heard popularly.
