Its Manifesto Season - two released, one awaited. I just speed-read Congress [27 pages] and AAP [28 apges] manifestos and realised quickly why these are not meant to be read or understood by most voters. You dont have be an expert in Communication or Human Behaviour to understand this - the manifestos are by and large utopian, partly irresponsible and downright boring. While many parts of the two manifestos were good and well meaning, they have both lost an opportunity. Various parties refer to the manifesto as a public pledge, a document of promises and a public declaration of intent etc. It essentially means: if we form a Govt, this is what we will try to do. Now, I am guessing at least some of these parties know there is a finite chance they will not form the Govt. So I would like to hear what they will do if they sit in Opposition, assuming they had conviction behind all those pledges? Also, I would have liked to read what they are likely to do vis-a-vis Govt formation if they dont get a mandate as a party i.e. get a majority of popular vote? Will they help specified or unspecified parties with a mandate to form the Government? How would they avoid a hung parliament that may create a prolonged state of uncertainty? Have they heard of the term horse trading and what responsibility would they accept in avoiding that? Of course, my assumption is that they are all fighting the election because they want to do something for the Electorate? Expert commentary anyone?
