The Washington Post says their experiment showed an even distribution of new stories with older content. The algorithms are a secret formula that changes, but The more popular a piece of content posted in your network becomes, the more likely it is to spill into your News Feed. The friends you interact most with are the ones you’ll see most frequently. Facebook has severely restricted the distribution of Pages because they want owners to pay for distribution. According to the Post, if you are a very active user, you will still see far below 30% of the content posted by your friends. They claim this is true even if you change your newsfeed to Top Stories and Most Recent. If you select Most Recent you will still see an equal amount of older content. If someone posts Robin Williams has just died, and a week later one of your friends says I am still sad, that makes the old story fresh news.
