Its October 5th, day 5 of our 31 Days of Halloween. Our featured song today comes from Sheb Wooley ... actor, singer, songwriter and cowboy. Our song today is The Purple People Eater. The idea of the song came from a joke told by a child of a friend of Shebs. Upon hearing the joke, he wrote the song in less than an hour. The story tells of this strange creature, described as a one-eyed, one-horned, flying, Purple People Eater, who comes to earth because, he wants to join a rock n roll band. When the song came out, most felt the creature was purple, as evidenced by requests by disc jockeys to have listeners send in drawings of what the creature looked like. Most everyone drew the picture, making the creature purple. However, the creature wasnt purple, he ate purple people. The Purple People Eater entered the top 100 at #7, May 24th, 1958. By its second week, it was #1, where it remained for six weeks. Of the songs 14 weeks on the charts, nine were spent in the top 10 & six of those number one, becoming one of the biggest selling Novelty records of all time.
