Its REVIEW time. Movie- oculus Director- mike flanagan Cast- karen gillan , brenten thwaites Genre-horrific thriller Had Shakespeare been alive he would have lauded mike vision for making this film as the bloodthirsty theme of conflicting appearance and reality forms the backbone of the film! Its stretched to such a point that you wonder whether what is shown is a mere fragment of imagination or reality. First time director mike weaves a magical tale about an audacious mirror whose supernatural presence is enough to kill people and harm them .the lead star of the film is the ominous mirror that has been there since two centuries and spans decades. Every owner of the film is killed mysteriously and how! Kelly and tim , live with their parents and one fine day enters this ostentatious mirror that changes their lives forever. Its not me its the mirror shouts tim as he is taken to custody at the age of three for killing his own father. The mirror provokes and creates unavoidable circumstances that tempts you to harm your own family. The film uses parallel time and spans eleven years in rapid motion. Post interval it becomes a devilish brooding psychological ride as the childhood and present events of kelly and tim are juxtaposed ambiguously. However the screenplay and editing is so good that you dont realize the passing time. The father chains the mother and ultimately kills her in a room when the children reveals his alleged affair to their mom.this in turn insinuates tim to kill his father in a fit of rage. Eleven years later when he is out of rehabilitation his sister and he revisits their old house and past when ultimately he ends up killing her too! Its the trick they say to hint at the superfluous reality created by the mirror every minute. The use of past and present diabolically in a single frame could have been confusing but the screenplay ensures its hassle free. The haunting presence and thrill at one hour 45 minutes is indeed a psychological helluva and jars our brain. It cant be called horror but enthralling and captivating Id say. Its a neat and bone chilling ride and the fatal presence of appearance and reality runs throughout. And as Shakespeare had said fair is foul ,foul is fair bears horrific resemblance in the lives of kelly and tim.i would highly recommend every soul to indulge in occult and salvation. 3.5/5
