Its Reformation Day! This date marks the 496th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the Wittenburg Chapel in protest to indulgences for sin being offered by the Roman Catholic Church. As the Reformation began to spread, the following five Latin phrases became the summary of what the Reformers sought to teach as they rejected papal doctrine for biblical doctrine. Not only do they define the principles of the Reformation, they’re also a good summary of biblical Christianity. The Five Solas Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)-The Bible is the ultimate authority for a believer. Solo Christo (Christ Alone)-We are saved only by the work of Christ. Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)-Salvation is given to us only because of grace. Sola Fide (Faith Alone)-This salvation comes only through the means of faith. Soli Deo Gloria (the Glory of God Alone)-Glory belongs only to God.
