Its Saturday and that means time for Abners Weird Science! Today Abner answers your science questions! Amanda asks-Why do Samoyeds have white eyelashes and black eyeliner? Are they all girls? Good question Amanda! Originally, all Samoyeds WERE girls, however this meant a quick end to the breed. Natural selection and evolution took over and boys appeared, although they had black eyelashes. Naturally is wasnt long before the boys discovered that the girls were batting their white eyelashes to finagle extra treats and food from humans, and before you could bat an eye, the boys were sporting white eyelashes. At first this was achieved with a white crayon, but nature again took over and soon the white eyelashes were natural on boys too! Its all a matter of survival Amanda! Weird huh? Sandy asks- Why are some dogs afraid of thunder? My research at the National Institute for Thunder Awareness has shown that some dogs are bothered by the fact that they cannot identify where thunder comes from. Rather than muster the energy to go out in the accompanying wind and rain to see where thunder comes from, some dogs with high IQs have found that looking worried will garner extra attention and treats during a stormand is preferable to getting wet. Lower IQ dogs quickly picked up on this and now it is standard procedure for many dogs. Its not fear, its all about the attention. Weird huh? Todays Science Experiment (Try this at home kids!) Lets test your dogs IQ! Items needed: you, your dog, a watch, treats of your choice, a bath towel, a hand towel, a can, a low table. These activities were developed to test your dogs problem solving abilities, social awareness, and language comprehension. Time your dog on the activities below, and note his response. Score your dogs response according to the chart below. 1 - Ask you dog to sit, show him a treat, and place it under the can. Time how long it takes him to get the treat. 2 - Ask you dog to sit, show him the towel and let him sniff it. Place the towel over his head, and time how long it takes him to get out of the towel. 3 - Ask you dog to sit, show him a treat, and as he watches, place the treat under the towel. Time how long it takes him to get the treat. 4-Ask you dog to sit, and look into his face. When he is looking at you, wait three seconds and break out into a hug smile. Note his response and score accordingly. 5 - Ask your dog to sit, and show him a treat. Place the treat far enough under the table that he will need to use his paws to retrieve it. Time his response and note whether or not he gets the treat. Score accordingly. 6- Ask you dog to sit, and say the word refridgerator in the same voice you use to call his name. Note his response. If he does not responds, say the word treat in the same voice. It he still does not respond, call is name. Note response, and score accordingly. Scoring system: If your dog responds in 15 seconds or less - 5 points 16-30 seconds - 4 points 31-60 seconds - 3 points 60 seconds or more - 2 points does not attempt - 0 points scoring for question 4 & 6 wags tail, comes to you first try - 5 points wags tail, comes to you second try - 4 points comes when name called - 3 points tilts head, looks at you, doesnt move - 2 points no response - 0 points Now, add up those points and lets see what your dogs IQ is! 25 points or more - Genius! Feed him the whole box of treats and send him to Harvard NOW! 15-24 points- Hes smart enough to wrap you around his paw, but wont do well at Harvard. Suggest a local college and feed him the rest of the treats 5-14 points Hes not too bright, but probably VERY cute! Suggest Petco puppy lessons, and feed rest of treats. 0-5 points - Are you sure hes paying attention? Feed rest of treats and try again later. Have fun with Science Saturday!
