Its a Great Day in Compton! 3 years ago, because of the large number of our friends, family and community members affected by breast cancer, my sister Councilwoman Janna Zurita, and I, knew that we had to put Compton on the Susan G. Komen for the Cures radar. Knowing that early detection is key to survival, we developed a partnership with myself & Compton Unified School District, Councilwoman Janna Zurita and the City of Compton, and our 64th Assemblymember Isadore Hall to increase awareness in our community by hosting Compton Walk for a Cure. According to the American Cancer Society estimates for 2014: - Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers, 1 in 8 women (12%) of women in the US will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. - 232, 670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the US. - 62,570 new cases of non-invasive, cancer at its earliest stage, will be diagnosed in women in the US. - 40,000 women in the United States will die from breast cancer this year. These numbers are staggering. TODAY there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment. As a result of events like ours all over the country, deaths from breast cancer have been declining since 1989, with larger decreases in women under 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness and improved treatments. This year, we have been very closely affected by our friend Marenda Hughes-Taylors diagnosis. She has been with us every step of the way from the very beginning and I am walking in honor of Marenda Hughes Taylor and the other women affected by this horrible disease! COMPTON... Lets WALK FOR A CURE Please join us for our Compton Walk for a Cure this Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Greenleaf Parkway in front of Walton Middle School. Registration begins at 7:00 am. There is no fee to participate. Donations will be accepted and forwarded to the Susan G. Komen foundation. Greenleaf Parkway
