Its a Thank You day today. An idea that began last March came to fruition yesterday. For that I/we have to first thank Kirby Hutto for buying in to the idea that the crowd would somehow appear at the right place and time. Then we have to thank The Buzzard Hollow Boys for agreeing to do the gig with us; if you havent seen them then youre missing something special. We thank the alums who made the trek in to the Hook for the many festivities, particularly those who rescheduled their weekend foray to accommodate this Friday event. The band got together in May 1979, over 35 years ago, and has been largely inactive since the late 80s. Owing to the geographical challenges involved, reconvening this group has been intermittent, and these reconvenings (reconventions? recon ventures?) could be described as casual at best. But weve always had fun, always laughed, always made memorable music as a group. Im saving the best for last here: the balance and bulk of the thanks goes to two parties. First, we thank you, we thank everyone who has ever taken the steps into the room to listen and dance to the music we play. We thank all of you who have ever driven long distance to see our various groupings, from tiny clubs in Richmond and Norfolk and Washington and Baltimore to slippery, dangerous floors at ATO, FIJI, The Carolinian and a hundred other dense, sweaty joints, from too-nice-for-dopes-like-us-shoes-required country clubs to sweltering outdoor parties on the porches of crumbling mansions and in just cut hayfields all over the South. And finally and in my mind most importantly I/we thank Charlie Pastorfield for literally making it all possible for the last 25 years. Seriously. If he had declined then the first (at Zippers joint on West Main in 1990) would not have happened, and I can say with reasonable assurance that none of the ensuing get togethers would have gained any traction. So Charlie, thanks. Thank you very much. Thank you, everybody!
