Its a Two-Way Street was launched this month in Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai and is based on the notion of cyclists and drivers showing mutual respect. SCA are calling a big BS on this Notion as being misguided, misdirected with more wasted funding yet again. (Dave Sharp of SCA initiated minimum safe passing laws with a yearly budget of $300) So whatever 2 way street you think were on its really only going one way, and its in the motorists favor. We understand that not all cyclists are road angels, but these statistics speak loud and clear when it comes to who needs the self reflecting on their respect meters. According to our latest SCA survey of 1100 participants 1/3 had been physically assaulted by a motorist. So heres a behavior you can change Mayors Jennifer Anderson and Steve Russell, how about you get the people sitting in 2 tonnes of high velocity steel and glass to stop running into us 87% of the time? Thats something they can work on together while we try and get from A to B via a bicycle without a police officer knocking on our loved ones doors. Or perhaps you can actually read some statistics? Here, try some of these the Monash University prepared earlier: Nearly nine out of 10 accidents involving cyclists and cars in Australia are the fault of the motorist, new research has found. Drivers were at fault in 87 per cent of incidents with cyclists and most did not realise they had behaved in a reckless or unsafe manner, according to the Monash University Accident Research Centre news.smh.au/breaking-news-national/study-blames-drivers-for-bike-crashes-20101122-18330.html So please, get off your high horse and show us who really needs to provide respect. One only has to read the comments to this story and see who needs to change their attitudes, its the more powerful, you know those ones in control of the killing machines? Once again we see a double sided solution in the shape of nonfactual opinion placing onus disproportionately on our roads most vulnerable. Respect is earned not given, so stop intimidating, bullying and killing us for a change and see how that works for the tension between road users, seems to have done the trick in Holland. In the meantime here are some ideas the cycling community have come up with in order to help your cause: Laws, enforcement, infrastructure and Presumed liability, with the latter two words being so difficult to utter no one in any position of influence and power can even mention the topic through fear. Seems theyd rather spend their government funding pursuing far more important things, like posting up pretty little banners... notion: 1. a conception of or belief about something. 2. an impulse or desire, especially one of a whimsical kind.
