Its a brand new week! Heres a brand new patient for this weeks Mondays Challenger: A ten-year old male presents to the nurse practitioner for poor school performance. His mother thinks he may have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD). He has been suspended from school for persistent behavioral issues with his teacher and other authority figures. The school told his mother that if this type of behavior occurs again that he will be expelled. He has a history of being “head-strong” and stubborn especially if he doesn’t get his way. This has caused turmoil within his family. Upon further questioning, the nurse practitioner discovers that he has been experiencing behavioral issues and poor school performances over the past 2 years. In fact, he is repeating the fourth grade this year. He has difficulty making and keeping friends and consistently blames others for his mistakes. Additionally, he has a short attention span and is easily annoyed and distracted. He resides with his mother and step father and his 4 year-old sister. His mother states that she and her husband are at their “wits end” and are looking for treatment options. Mom also states that she is fearful he may harm his sister when he becomes angry.
