Its a little over a week I democratically handed over power as the President of the Junior Common Room (JCR) of the Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall of the University of Ghana. Its one of a mixed feeling especially with my endless heart of service to humanity and also the need to have a full concentration on my academics. Great opportunities always lie in very little opportunities and to have the opportunity to serve colleague students has presented me with greater opportunities. The unquantifiable experience, exposure, networking and problem solving skills are the greatest assets acquired throughout the journey. Undeniably, though I have seen a reduction in my GPA,I find solace in the fact that I never wasted my time as the experience gathered can never be thought in the Lecturer room.Out of office however is not out of leadership as I have seen significant improvement of my new self as compared to my old self. Friends and positive minded people have been my backbone. For me,whilst I will say I carried the title around my neck working hard to translate ideas into reality, the success achieved during my tenure is attributed to the people around me.One thing I have observed is that to be a good leader in Africa you must dance to the rhythm of the people even if they are wrong. One will be hailed as a good leader if he goes against the standards or the rules to make the people happy. This leads me to opine that AFRICA DOES NOT ONLY NEED GOOD LEADERS AS WE ALWAYS CRY FOR BUT GOOD FOLLOWERS is a key factor for growth and development. No matter how good you are as a leader, you never can get desired results if the people you lead are ideologically myopic. Being visionary and looking into the future to provide solutions to the problems of the future now makes you an unpopular leader in our part of the world as your followers are keen on outright result within the short term pushing the leader to always opt for short termism as against long term benefit for all.Was that the reason why we never understood Nkrumah and his seven year development plan? Not that leaders in Africa especially the young ones like myself and many of my friends are not desirous of changing the status quo but the structures and or the system and especially the people will prevent you from changing the status quo. The followers in Africa want the same results over and over again without any new addition as any effort to bring about change will be met with stiff opposition. Hey forgot I have an exam to write.....Will be back. Watch out for my article entitled DRIVING THE VEHICLE OF LEADERSHIP..................
