Its a new day here in Austin, where voters of all stripes seem to have agreed on one thing: that were tired of city council pushing growth willy-nilly without much planning for the consequences. Of course, growth has been Austins number one issue for decades. What Ive seen, over the 20-plus years Ive lived here, is our chief concern swing from environment to affordability. What we need now is an S.O.S. for middle-class homeowners and working-class renters - and drivers. The realities of economics and state law wont make it easy. But I supported Steve Adler for mayor, and Im reasonably hopeful that our new city council is the most diverse one weve ever had. I count seven women, three Hispanics, and one African-American. Well even have three Republicans. Hows that for diversity? Weve got several strong liberal champions like Kathie Tovo, Greg Casar and Ann Kitchen on council, and only one certified wingnut - Don Zimmerman, who goes to show that Northwest Austin really is South Dallas. Buckle your seatbelts - things are about to get interesting.
