Its a story I pitched when I worked in mainstream television, a problem Ive personally faced in the past and a reality many Aboriginal women face everyday, now Im going through it again. We need to find a bigger place and weve applied for a few that fit our budget and needs and of course I look good on paper, then when it comes time to look at the place Im seen as just another Indian, a pregnant one. My education, career and positive renting record plays no part when they see my brown face. Ive done everything on my own in life and I shouldnt have to bring my white looking boyfriend with me to seem acceptable as a renter. Of course I would have no problem renting a dump as many of our young mothers are made to if housing isnt made available to them. Its 2014 people! Open your minds for goodness sakes. This racism and hate has to stop. Now that Im going to be a mother I am more passionate about speaking out on issues that are holding back all of society as a whole. We all have to be a part of positive change. I wish I just had a down payment saved to buy my own home. That is my next goal and when I set myself a goal I dont stop until I make it happen.
