Its always delightful when someone you greatly admire praises another of your favorites but its no less intriguing when someone you idolize doesnt seem much impressed by another of your role models. Heres what the great Orson Welles once said of the master Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonionis use of the long take in his movies: I dont like to dwell on things. Its one of the reasons Im so bored with Antonioni - the belief that, because a shot is good, its going to get better if you keep looking at it. He gives you a full shot of somebody walking down a road. And you think, Well, hes not going to carry that woman all the way up that road. But he does.
