Its always interesting that some global entities are more aware of resources in our own communities than we are. Check out this interview about uhupil.org, which was featured in the US Aljazeera network. UHUs great work is worth knowing about and supporting. Share their information with family/friends, to improve awareness and support about HIV/AIDS in the Black community and beyond. Heres the video: https://youtube/watch?v=CEOCLoePN6s Translation is here: Title: Managing daily life with HIV Proof that one can live despite the AIDS disease is the story of Ron Simmons. In his early sixties, Ron has been living with HIV fir nearly 25 years. He lives his life naturally, goes to work and when we spoke with him, one of the first things Mr. Simmons talks about is the extent of ignorance about AIDS and HIV. (RON SIMMONS, living with HIV): “There is still a lot of people who don’t know about the virus, who don’t know how you get the virus; what they hear is that people who have the disease are not good people.” In recent years, Ron has taken on the responsibility of helping others – he helped establish a community organization in Washington to help those who get the disease, especially those who prefer to stay private about their disease. One idea has been the mobile clinic, which drives around the city’s streets making stops in remote areas or locations to offer free HIV medical tests. It seems the program is working – The UsHelpingUS organization now has 19 employees in its staff offering medical checks to those affected or believe they may have contracted the virus. (GUY ANTHONY, Counselor): “This is very important because there are people in the community who trust us and trust they can get a free, quick and effective scan. (RON SIMMONS, living with HIV): “Most of my generation (who got HIV) are dead, but the positive thing is that the disease is no longer a nightmare.” There are over 1 million people with the virus in America but, among African Americans, especially men, they are most at risk of getting the disease according to scientific studies which confirm that treatment starts with awareness and prevention.”
