Its anothet tourism booster for MANILA..... Manila race to improve its image Macon Ramos-Araneta Feb. 05, 2014 at 12:01am/ Manila Standard Today Vice Mayor Isko Moreno on Tuesday expressed hope the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014 will improve Manila’s image that suffered following the 2010 Luneta hostage crisis. “We are welcoming this type of event because a few years ago, we can’t deny that a bloody and a sad incident occurred in our place,” he said. The botched rescue of Hong Kong tourists who were held hostage by dismissed P/Capt. Rogelio Mendoza happened infront of Quirino Grandstand. He said this year’s race of solar-powered vehicles would be a big boost to the tourism industry especially the capital. “Can you imagine of one participant of the marathon would spend $1,000 during the duration of the event in the Manila. That would mean an additional $3 million from the 3,000 delegates coming over. That would be a big help,” Moreno said. The foreign student-delegates would come from 16 countries in Asia and the Middle East representing Brunei, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Pakistan, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and the Philippines. Among the competitors are students from Adamson University, De La Salle University, Don Bosco, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technological Institute of the Philippines in Quezon City, University of San Carlos and University of Sto. Tomas. Moreno said traffic along Roxas Boulevard, between P. Burgos and T.M. Kalaw Streets, will be diverted and re-routed. Since Shell Eco-Marathon started five years ago, the race was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia./macon ramos-araneta
