Its apparent from my interaction with one our friends that we have a lot to overcome... Societal attitudes about the nature of mental illness persist, regardless of the twenty + years of research that showing why such stigmas are harmful to people who suffer from a debilitating physical condition. The view that mental disorders are personal weaknesses is harmful to patients suffering from these conditions; no other physical abnormality is treated with such utter disdain and no one would verbally berate a cancer victim or blind person for their condition; Yet I see it every day...and it sickens me. Most illnesses have support in the community, every year millions of people walk to raise money for breast cancer or leukemia; the awareness campaigns targeting Mental Health initiatives overwhelmingly focus on commemorating those that have been driven to Suicide to escape their symptoms... And society should hang their collective heads in shame.
