Its approaching year end and we thought it a good time to share - TopicsExpress

Its approaching year end and we thought it a good time to share with everyone some of our favorites applications weve been using. Some of these are classics, but bear being mentioned for standing the test of time, some are new to us, and some weve only been using for a few weeks. But each of them was useful enough for us, that we thought it was worth sharing with all of you. So here it goes, in no particular order number. 1) Greenshot Screen Shot utility - Free and Open Source getgreenshot.org/ Green shot is a light weight, simple screen shot utility. You simply install, hit pint screen, highlight the target area, and are given numerous options for what to do with the print screen. Easy, simply, and FREE! 2) SnagIt – Techsmith – Paid $49.95 https://techsmith/download/snagit/ SnagIt might be the Gold Standard for Screen Shot utilities, but you’ll pay to get that. It’s a great too, I use it on my primary computer (and use Greenshot on by 2nd pc). Snag it shines with the embedded editing you get when doing screen captures. You highlight your target area, and you can immediately crop, add text, add pointer arrows and much more. The downside being it’s a bit more of a hog that the simpler programs, and is far more expensive. But if you often find yourself wanting to add more information to your print screen (It’s great for instructional articles or emails), this is probably the tool for you. 3) Evernote – A Timeless Classic – Android, IOS, or Windows. Free and Paid available - https://evernote/ Evernote is probably the best and most popular note taking program out there today. It’s comparable to Google Keep (Keep is much more immature), and it’s primary competitor is probably Microsoft One Note. That said, Ive personally started using Evernote myself, and other’s here at EMC have used it for years. Ive used One Note, Keep, and now Evernote, and wonder why I took so long to make the switch. All your notebooks, notes, folders, voice recordings and more sync effortlessly to the “Cloud”. Sign in to the desktop app and all your notes have synced. I use the free version, and have no complaints. Evernote is Top Notch. 4) Boomerang for Outlook or Gmail / Google Apps – Free with limited “credits” or Paid starting at $4.99 per month. - boomeranggmail/ Boomerang is a new one to me, and I’ve only very recently started using it. It’s a little premature to say how great it is yet, but the idea is fantastic. What Boomerang does, is to return a message to your inbox if the sender doesn’t reply, or if you set one of multiple return options for when you want to have it remind you. This is great for that email you send off to a client, co-worker, or family member but need to follow up on. Sometimes you move it to a folder, or set a reminder, but Boomerang takes care of much of that for you. When you go to send your message, you get options right then for when to return, or “Boomerang” this message back. In concept, this is really a great tool. Time will tell if it works well, but so far it’s been great. 5) Mileage Tracker – Paid - $2.99 – Android Only softmimo/MileageTracker.php Some of us need to keep good mileage records for company reimbursement, billing, or tax purposes. Mileage Tracker works wonders to keep you organized when you need a good way to pull that data together in an easy simple way. Install the app, and start it before you take a trip. Once you arrive, it will auto-calculate your mileage by GPS, and has options for what car (personal or company), notes, and more. At the end of the year, you can print your report to an Excel sheet and turn it for accounting or taxes. It’s cheap, it’s accurate, and it’s easy to use. That said, there are definitely a few apps out there that do this for you, but we use this one and are comfortable recommending it. 6) Magnifying Apps – Free and Paid – Many options Android - https://play.google/store/apps/details?id=com.app2u.magnifier&hl=en Apple - https://itunes.apple/us/app/magnifying-glass-light-digital/id406048120?mt=8 Do you ever find yourself needing a pair of reading glasses, or just struggling to read some really small print? If so, there are many good free magnifying apps available that make that smart phone a go-to auto-focus zoom lens. Weve used this one for Android with success from App2U and we found this app for IOS (Apple) Devices. We can’t speak to how well the Apple program works, but the reviews are great. If you know of any good apps youd like to suggest, wed love to hear. Reply back and well save your Responses so we can review and share them next time. We’ll leave you with this for now, but please feel free to share this with others via Facebook, email or by the classic print and leave a copy in the lunch/break room. Until then, to you and all your staff have a great New Years! Damon Galt - VP EMC Computers PH: 440-888-8118 FX: 440-525-2491 support@emccomputers emccomputers
