Its back! Giardia is rearing its head in the neighborhood. This microscopic parasite can go unrecognized for many weeks before you may discover what is causing your dogs diarrhea and discomfort. Giardia is found in standing water (which we have in spades right now), and is spread through the feces of other dogs- most often in dog parks and public places that dogs frequent. Heres what you need to know and what you can do. 1. If your dog is having loose stool- keep him home until you have a chance to try a basic digestive aid (like raw goat milk) to rule out simple upset tummy. 2. Giardia is very contagious, and can spread to people. 3. If youve noticed your dog having excessive loose stools, make an appointment with your vet for a check up and fecal exam. NOTE: Giardia cysts have to be present for the fecal to test positive. There may not be enough to see, but it only takes one to cause problems for your dog. You may want to have more than one fecal test if you know of others in your dogs social group who also have loose stool. 4. If your dog has Giardia, your yard needs to be treated. Take your dog out to potty in only one area of your yard. Grab a yard sprayer you can attach to your hose, and add Dawn or Kirkland brand dish soap to the sprayer. Soak your yard with two to three inches of saturation and let it be. The soap will help discourage the Giardia parasite from making its way to a new host. 5. ALWAYS clean up after your dog. 6. Use Diatomaceous Earth as a parasite killer (even with a veterinary remedy) both in your dog and in your yard.. 7. Eliminate as many carbohydrates from your dogs diet as you can. Giardia thrives on Glucose provided by carbohydrates. 8. Replenish your dogs good gut flora (positive bacteria/probiotics). Giardia sits in the small parts of the intestines and takes up the good flora space. Knock it out with more good bacteria than it can overcome. Good will triumph, as the immune system will have fuel to fight with. Need more info? Just stop by the store.
