Its been 2+ weeks since Patches came into our lives so its time we introduce him. He was brought in to be euthanized by an elderly gentleman because he hadnt been eating for a couple of weeks. :-/ When I looked at Patches, sitting in a small cardboard box, I just started crying. He was simply skin and bones - thats it. His eyes and nose were crusted shut yet he sat up, as if he wanted to look around. The insides of his cheeks and lips were ulcerated, bleeding and he smelled absolutely awful. And...he was purring. All I kept thinking was that no animal deserves to die this way and yes, euthanasia would end his suffering BUT what if he could know and feel much more than that?! We all agreed that it was worth a shot! Thankfully, Patches owner allowed us to take him into our rescue (he actually seemed relieved - I could see it in his teary eyes). We quickly went to work. We cleaned his eyes and nose, put him on IV fluids and gave him pain medication, antibiotics and tummy meds. He had horrid pancreatitis, was emaciated and his cheeks/lips were basically adhered to the thick disease on his teeth, causing them to ulcerate. :( The last picture is how he looked on Day 1... The first few pictures are of Patches today...snuggled up on the couch next to me, helping me write up files. :) Hes an eating machine, is gaining weight like a trooper and appears happy (despite his hilarious, unimpressed, grumpy facial expression). :) We dont know how long hell be with us but at least when the time comes, he will be comfortable as he crosses that bridge, surrounded by people who love him to pieces.
