Its been a long time between posts, but were back to say that all the rain has a few early-runners in the harbors and even well upstream on the Ahnapee and Kewaunee rivers, as well as in the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal and even off the Strawberry Creek refuge. Many fish still in the lake, however, and peak egg collection will begin in early October. The Besadny Facility at Kewaunee will turn on the pumps in two to three weeks and will be holding an Open House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4; more than 1,000 people are expected if the weather is decent. There will be tours, activities for the kids, displays, demonstrations and food and refreshments. Out on the big lake itself, some pre-spawn brown trout and chinook and coho salmon are being caught within a mile of the river mouths but the best action for silver fish — steelhead, younger chinooks and an occasional laker — has been in deeper water, some days just 70 to 170 and other days (including recently) in 200 to 400 feet of water. Some charters have been hooking 10 to 20 or more fish in the past week. Spoons have been solid, but flasher/fly combos and plugs are also getting some hits.
