Its been a rather unusual week. After a number of years working part time at The Music Room, Ive decided its time to go back to being a full time freelance musician, sound engineer and putative luthier. Its been a bit of a wrench as the shop is a good place with a bunch of excellent people who have become some of my very best friends. However time and tide wait for no man and so forth. Weve spent a lot of time working on the studio this week, now lowering the ceiling by six inches to accommodate additional soundproofing - a second layer of rockwool and some specialist acoustic plasterboard-ish stuff that does a fantastic job but is incredibly heavy. Ive also been up to my neck in redesigning the studio publicity, a process that many of you will know well is by turns exciting and exasperating. Todays main task is a scroll repair on a violin - an interesting repair as it involves chalk fitting a new section of maple while matching the grain as closely as possible. Its all go here...!
