Its been a while since Ive done this without a news link to accompany it... But, heres a few fanboy ramblings in regards to my Then and Now feelings towards Marvels Captain America: Civil War.... Enjoy! Its been a few months since Marvel announced that the third Captain America movie would be an adaptation of their 2006 event Civil War. So... How am I looking at it, now? To begin with, when the rumors were rolling, and people were talking, I was completely against the idea of Civil War ever being adapted to film. ESPECIALLY in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, it seemed a lot of people were completely for it. I didnt feel it had much grounds to work. Marvels film universe is MUCH different from their comic book universe. In their comic universe, they have so many heroes who are both publically outed, and still have secret identities. In the movies, all of the heroes presented, so far, either dont have secret identities, or they dont live on Earth. Heck, Marvel even made it a POINT to do that! The decision to end Marvels Iron Man with Tony Stark revealing his secret identity to the public was to, firmly, establish that Marvel wasnt trying to do the same, old comic book movies youve seen in the past. And, since, none of their heroes have secret identities. Heck, the only one who wears a mask - And doesnt need it - is Captain America! And everyone and their grandmother (Literally) knows who he is! On top of that, everyone was registered by SHIELD! So, how would they even be able to do Civil War? Essentially, I didnt think itd happen, so I was against it. Then Marvel announced it... Were getting Marvels CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR in 2016. Like... WHAT? But, the thing is.... Its actually happening. I gained faith in the idea, immediately. Not because I am incredibly flip-floppy. But, rather, because if Marvel has it planned, it means they know how theyre going to get there, and why. They know what theyre doing, and they havent failed to show that. Plus, they immediately cleared it up! Its not even about secret identities. Its about the government feeling the superheroes need government intervention to keep them in-check. And, with this, I realized I was completely forgetting the BIG PICTURE. Its not about Civil War.... Its about how we get there. And the ground was laid, starting with Marvels Captain America: The Winter Soldier. From there, you can see the natural progression very easily. Even though SHIELD had the heroes registered, in the end, they turned out to really be Hydra. Thus, the branch was shut down. From there? The heroes govern themselves in Marvels The Avengers: Age of Ultron, while the government tries to get itself back in order after the events of Marvels Captain America: The Winter Soldiers, with the leaks and everything caused by Black Widow. With The Avengers team, Tony is privatizing global security, thus the heroes now govern themselves. But.... WAIT! Tony screws up, and Ultron is created! Ultron wreaks havoc across the world, and, BAM! Tony is blamed, and the heroes lose their credibility. The government now calls for more control over the superhuman populace, which brings us to Marvels Captain America: Civil War. Reeling from the events of Marvels The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony may be willing to give up his freedoms to ensure the world is better protected, while Steve may not be too willing to do the same. This is the natural progression.... And this is how it will work. It makes much more sense than just looking at the next film as an adaptation of Civil War. You gotta see the next film as the end point to a secret story arc being threaded along for years, through different movies. And this is why Im way more excited for it than I was a few months ago. It makes so much more sense, now, than it did before the announcement. Marvels got this!
