Its been an incredibly busy couple of days here at the Sacramento SPCA. While our adoption event was going on this past Saturday, we also worked with the City of Rancho Cordova to save this handsome swan. Animal Control Officer Justin Arnold found the bird acting strangely in a residential area. Able to get him in the truck, Justin brought the bird to the Sacramento SPCA where our veterinary staff went to work. Using her training in how to handle large birds, Brittany LeCompte, a registered veterinary technician specializing in shelter medicine, was able to examine the swan who, at times, was unable to stand on his own. Brittanys examination found no obvious signs of trauma, but it was determined that the bird was lethargic due to dehydration. Given water, but unwilling to drink it, the bird had to be set up in our (specially outfitted) barn for observation. It was our hope that after given some time, the swan would begin to drink again. Dr. Laurie Siperstein-Cook, our chief of shelter medicine, and Brittany kept close eyes on him over the next few days and, eventually, he drank. It made all the difference. He arrived on Saturday and we were able to release him back into the wild yesterday. It’s never a dull day at the Sacramento SPCA!
