Its been awhile for an update so heres some news! Weve had some really hot weather this summer. Hot for us, that is. Its a bit cooler today but more high heat is on the way. HJ eats less when its hot and sleeps (or rests, as it were) a lot more. Her usual way of eating is to eat it all when its presented to her. I dont worry when she goes into grazing mode on hot days. Ping pong balls remain her favorite toy and we have multiple play sessions every day. She has combined tissue paper play with ppb play so now theres some stalking and hunting in addition to chasing. There are always at least 2 sheets of tissue paper on the floor with replacements at least once a week since...well...she has claws so you can figure out why. This little cat has come such a long way in trusting and becoming accustomed to things that used to scare her. Tissue paper, for example, was scary because of the sound. I posted photos around Christmas last year of her on top of some paper. It was quite a long time after that when she decided jumping on it, scooting under it, and grabbing it all up with her feet was fun and not scary. At the last adoption, one of the PP volunteers was handing out synthetic fleece to see if anyones cat would like it. That fleece was on the floor for weeks and was avoided at all costs by HJ. Last week she decided it was okay to take a nap on it. She takes her time. A couple of weeks ago I stopped by PetSmart for some cat food and noticed a sale on toys - buy 2 get 1 free. I decided to get a new laser pointer (shes always liked that but play time is short with it - I think she gets bored. I also picked up a 3-pack furry rectangular shaped toys. She like those but 2 are in reserve because a lot of drool happened. She doesnt carry the toy around but rolls around and enjoys herself quite a lot. The third toy I picked up was a feather (lots of feathers actually) on a stick. Shes never shown much interest in this kind of thing but I got one anyway. (She doesnt like things over her head - no waving of the feather stick, for example - shed run away.) I learned early on that HJ doesnt usually like new things right away and needs time to warm up to them. I simply put the feather toy on the floor and left it there for her to explore in her own time. After a couple of weeks I moved it so its about HJ nose height. At each place she showed some interest but not much. Ill leave it and see if one day she decides she wants to play with it. She can take her time. I tried having the ceiling fan on during the hot days to draw in air. Even the slowest speed scared her. Poor kitty. Thats one thing that will become a slow acclimation...or perhaps not at all. I rarely have it on but maybe Ill try it again sometime. Shes done so well with so many things including loud sounds. Last Saturday we had a very diverse weather day. A little rain followed by hail followed by a long, slow-to-start thunderclap which happened while HJ was lounging by the open screen door. She wasnt sure what to do, or what was happening, and when the big boom hit she took off but didnt hide under the bed! I was rather proud of her! Whenever she hears something shes not sure of, she looks at me, I tell her everything is okay, and she goes back to what she was doing. Since this is quite long, Ill post separately about her sleeping habits.
